Authentic Matcha Tea

Ingredients
  

Matcha Base
  • 1/4 tsp ceremonial-grade matcha powder sifted
  • 2 oz hot water 175°F / 80°C
Optional Latte Add-ins
  • 6 oz steamed milk or hot water for latte or traditional tea
  • sweetener like honey or maple syrup, to taste

Equipment

  • Fine Mesh Sifter
  • Bamboo Whisk (Chasen)
  • Small Bowl or Mug

Method
 

  1. Sift 1/4 tsp of matcha powder into a bowl using a fine mesh strainer to prevent clumps.
  2. Add 2 oz of hot water (175°F / 80°C).
  3. Whisk rapidly in a zig-zag motion using a bamboo whisk until frothy, about 30 seconds.
  4. Top with 6 oz of hot water for traditional tea, or steamed milk for a latte.
  5. Add sweetener if desired, stir briefly, and serve immediately.

Notes

For iced matcha, shake matcha and hot water in a jar until smooth, then pour over ice and top with milk or cold water.
